As the nights draw in and we rely more and more on our central heating the dry atmosphere causes many people to experience “winter itch”.
Older people living in dry centrally heated homes and eczema sufferers often find themselves plagued by generalised itching in the winter months which can be very stressful and hard to manage.
Top tips for dealing with this irritating problem include:
1. Avoid bathing or showering with excessively hot water and avoiding
drying wash products, (liquid shower gels often contain strong
detergents that strip oils from the skin). A gentle soap is a better
2. Use body oil or moisturiser after bathing/showering while skin is still
damp. Oily emollients are better in this regard than lotions as they contain
more moisturising ingredients than water based lotions. Hands are
particularly vulnerable from frequent washing and need regular top ups
of cream throughout the day.
3. Wool, polyester and fabrics with rough seams and stitching can all
make itching worse and it is a good idea to wash clothes before they
are worn for the first time to remove any finishing chemicals applied
4. A humidifier, even saucers of water on window sills above radiators
may help to lessen the dryness in the home.
5. Research recommends taking a regular Vitamin D supplement to help
maintain skin condition.
6. A surprisingly large number of people do not drink enough during
the day. Stay hydrated and you will feel better and your skin will
Caring for skin affected by Eczema or Winter Itch:
Marble Hill manufactures a complete range of skincare for dry skin, whether caused by eczema, diabetes, psoriasis, occupations requiring frequent cleansing or over washing:
Highly recommended by our customers for relief of dry, itchy skin.
Because prevention is always better than cure we suggest using a wash product that actually adds moisture to the skin rather than a synthetic detergent which effectively removes it.
Each bar contains conditioning Neem oil, Shea butter for added moisture and a soothing blend of oils including sweet almond oil, avocado oil and Vitamin E, together with pure water from our well on the family farm in county Donegal. Neem oil soap is also effective against viruses as soaps destroy viral particles.
2. Q24 Body Oil
Once skin has been gently cleansed we suggest applying Q24 body oil, recommended by Vogue as a “skin saviour “particularly for people in dry environments.
Like our creams, Q24 is completely fragrance free and pure with no chemical additives.
Used after bathing it locks in moisture, reducing the dryness that causes itching. It can be used all over the body and leaves skin refreshed and supple.
3. PediSalve Total Footcare Cream
Recommended by podiatrists, doctors and diabetes educators, PediSalve
is an all in one foot health marvel. It softens and helps remove hard skin, calluses and corns.
It keeps the skin supple and conditioned. PediSalve is recommended by our clients for healing cracks and skin fissures ( see our reviews and photographs on Amazon UK)
Acts as a barrier to athletes foot and unlike other, water based foot care lotions and creams, can be used safely between the toes as it does not support either bacterial or fungal infections .
Because it melts to a silky oil on contact with the skin it can be used to massage the joints of the foot and ankle promoting blood and lymphatic circulation.
5. True Natural Moroccan Argan oil and Vitamin E shampoo.
Many people complain of dryness and itching of their scalp. Itchy

psoriasis. True natural Moroccan Argan oil shampoo has none of the drying or
irritating ingredients that cause so many problems. It is: 100% fragrance free, no MI/SLS/SLES, no parabens, no GMO, Vegan and Cruelty free.
6. True Natural Handwash
Particularly now in the times of Covid19 we are all washing our hands more than ever and cases of hand dermatitis are rising rapidly. This is why we have developed True Natural Liquid Handwash. Completely additive free and contains no allergens or fragrances, this is a liquid handwash that can be used with confidence.
Children are especially vulnerable to dry, itchy, sore hands and the 500ml is ideal for topping up mini bottles for school use. Combine True Natural Liquid Hand wash with True Natural Hand cream for best results.
7. True Natural Hand Cream
