MARBLE HILL COLLOIDAL OATMEAL
You may have been recommended to use colloidal oatmeal for your own eczema or psoriasis or to help relieve the symptoms of chickenpox or sunburn- colloidal oatmeal is used for a wide variety of skin conditions, irritation, rash or more.
So, you have heard about colloidal oatmeal but what actually is it?
Is it different from porridge?
Porridge and Colloidal oatmeal are both obtained from oat grains (botanical name: Avena Sativa) but while we eat regular oats in porridge, muesli or flapjacks, we do not eat colloidal oatmeal.
Grinding the whole oatmeal grain extremely finely after the tough outer coat (also called the “hull”) is removed produces a floury powder.
When it is fine enough it is called “ colloidal oatmeal “ which can be added to warm water in the bath or used directly on the skin in pastes , face masks etc.
Because it is so finely ground the natural goodness is released into the water and stays suspended as a “colloid” – a microscopic substance dispersed evenly throughout another substance. When it dissolves thoroughly the powder makes the water appear milky and gives it a silky feel.
Marble Hill Superfine Colloidal Oatmeal is exceptionally finely ground to release the active ingredients quickly for maximum benefit. Because it is so fine, it rinses away easily.
(While untreated oatmeal contains the same ingredients it does not release its benefits in this efficient way and sinks to the bottom of the bath where it becomes soggy and difficult to remove)
Why does colloidal oatmeal help skin conditions?
People use colloidal oatmeal for dry itchy skin conditions because it is an anti irritant due to its naturally nourishing properties containing powerful anti inflammatory, antioxidant and itch relieving ingredients.
Two active constituents play a key role in its effects, Beta Glucans, which are polysaccharide compounds which draw water to the skin and help skin healing and Avenanthramides, plant phenols that display strong anti-inflammatory and anti oxidant properties.
They are concentrated in the bran on the outer part of the grain so it is important to use a whole grain product not a refined oatmeal flour.
And because it also contains “saponins”, natural gentle cleansers it is popular for people who want to avoid drying chemicals when they wash.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The very small particles settle evenly onto the skin, attracting water to fight dryness. The particles also create a barrier film on the skin that has protective qualities and reduces water loss through the skin surface.
Oatmeal has the ability to balance acidity and can help normalize the pH levels of the skin, which can be helpful in relieving itching.
The colloidal oatmeal soothes and moisturises the skin as you bathe, gently cleans and helps ease discomfort.
The action of the Avenanthramides helps ease inflammation so it is excellent for rashes and hot, irritated conditions like sunburn, chickenpox and dermatitis.
It helps rough skin become supple and smooth, the beta glucans providing a protective layer which helps retain skin moisture.
The saponins are natural cleansers so you do not need any other soaps or bubble bath.
HOW DO I USE MARBLE HILL SUPERFINE COLLOIDAL OATMEAL?
Run a warm bath, do not use overly hot water as this will only dry out and irritate sensitive skin.
Add the Superfine Colloidal Oatmeal Powder under the running water, stirring it gently so that it is evenly distributed throughout the bath water. You will see the water becoming cloudy and starting to feel smooth and silky as the oatmeal dissolves.
Get into the bath carefully as it may be slippery and relax for ten to thirty minutes, enjoying the warmth and allowing the soothing qualities to do their work. Get out of the bath carefully and pat dry, don’t rub your towel hard on your skin when you get out of the bath to help retain the protective coating left behind.
WHAT SKIN CONDITIONS CAN IT HELP?
Thanks to their natural composition and chemical properties, oats have unique qualities that make them ideally suited for sensitive and dry skin problems.
Indeed, it is said that oats have a complete and gentle yet powerful skin remedy naturally in-built into their chemistry.
Colloidal oatmeal is most often used to relieve dry, itchy skin as in Eczema, Psoriasis, Pruritus and Atopic dermatitis to moisturise and condition. It also provides a protective layer against further dryness.
It is also suitable for skin affected by sunburn, prickly heat, to relieve chickenpox rash and other common causes of skin irritation.
Suitable for the whole family including children and older adults.
As we get older skin becomes vulnerable to dryness and flaking. Winter itch is a common problem caused by exposure to dry centrally heated air which combines with dry skin to cause chronic itching which can, even when low grade, be very distressing long term. A daily soothing oatmeal bath may provide relief and relaxation.
People with diabetes are prone to dry, uncomfortable skin conditions which may be relieved by regular colloidal oatmeal baths.
Colloidal oatmeal may be indicated as an alternative for conditions where people are already sensitive to certain product ingredients.
These include substances that cause allergies or reactions, such as preservatives, fragrances or synthetic detergents.
Using a totally natural pure option allows irritated skin to recover.
Precautions:
Although oatmeal is gluten free it is usually recommended that people who are gluten intolerant should not use colloidal oatmeal.
Be careful when getting in and out of the bath as it may be slippery.
Anyone who is allergic to oatmeal should not use colloidal oatmeal.
