What is Detergentitis?
Detergentitis:
Dermatitis/eczema are epidemic today.
Use of synthetic detergents has exploded in the last 20 years or so.
Synthetic detergents are found in all liquid wash products including shower gels, hand washes and shampoos.
And all domestic cleaning products such as washing-up liquid, liquid laundry detergent, floor cleaners etc.
Among the problems associated with detergent use are:
Dryness – These are very effective products which are used to remove dirt and grease from surfaces, including your skin when you use them for washing. The more you use the more oils will be stripped out and the drier your skin will become.
Irritation – many detergents are recognised as direct irritants, these include sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Many other detergents are also irritant but have less impact.
Allergies – Many ingredients in the products we use on our skin cause allergies, these include wash products and make up. Fragrances are usually described as the most allergenic substances in common use but MI (methylisothiazolinone) and cocamidopropyl betaine are becoming an increasing problem.

How can I avoid “Detergentitis“?
- Avoid using liquid cleansers, shower gels, baby wash products.
- Avoid products which contain artificial chemicals such as fragrances, preservatives and colours.
- Use warm, not hot water. Hot water is very drying.
- Do not linger in the bath or shower, this dries out skin.
- Moisturise your skin regularly with natural products.
