What is in your shampoo?
Does your shampoo contain this ingredient, accused of causing hair loss?
A court in the USA is currently considering a case which accuses OGX Shampoos of causing significant Hair loss due to its DMDM hydantoin content. Many users of this popular brand of shampoo have complained of their hair falling out after using OGX shampoo.
And these accusations are not limited to OGX – Tresemme has also been targeted by these claims.
Is there any foundation for such claims?
It has been known for many years that the synthetic ingredients found in modern detergent based shampoo can be linked to scalp problems, drying of the hair shaft and even long term chronic allergic contact dermatitis and formaldehyde is a known carcinogen subject to strict regulation.
But what are the accusations relating to OGX?
Johnson & Johnson removed formaldehyde from their shampoo formulas years ago but they did not remove DMDM hydantoin. So what you might say, once the formaldehyde is gone surely the problem has been resolved?
What Johnson & Johnson did not reveal is that DMDM hydantoin is a “precursor “to formaldehyde, in other words when it breaks down formaldehyde is released.
This case has stirred up a lot of attention in the US press with many other women coming forward to tell their stories of DMDM hydantoin causing their hair to fall out.
This case, which, if successful, will undoubtedly result in multi million payouts to those who have suffered devastating injury to their appearance, mental health and self esteem, is still making its way through the courts and naturally Johnson & Johnson will fight every step of the way.
But if it is proven the impact will be felt throughout the hair care industry as DMDM hydantoin is found in shampoos from many trusted suppliers , ironically often in products touted as being exceptionally useful for protecting hair from thinning and breakage.
You will find a link to the INCI decoder list at the end of this article where hair care products containing DMDM hydantoin can viewed.

We do not need to add any masking fragrances to disguise chemical odours or artificial conditioner to replace your natural sebum.
Gentle enough for baby’s hair, with plentiful lather and easily rinsed out, our Argan oil shampoo is also gentle on the environment as it reduces water usage, requires only a small amount for a thorough wash and because it doesn’t strip out all your hair protective natural oils it does not require a separate conditioner to be applied after washing.
